With the dawn of digital media and currency, we are witnessing the sunset of newspapers, coins, bank notes, photographic film and all the inherent beauty these ‘things’ possess. I’m fascinated with cash specifically because it is a physical, tangible object that has collectively united humans for over 5,000 years. Each and every coin minted, every bill printed has a history behind it, connecting all the various hands that have passed it along over time.
The United States’ strange and shadowy legacy is buried within these intricate engraved details and decorative motifs and I am currently pulling elements from these universal archetypes. The works are reflections on the craftmanship and eloquence of design language from another time.
In a cashless society, will digital accounts filled with crypto currency provide the same level of trust and connection that traditional cash has? While the penny has officially been retired, with an estimated 250 to 300 billion in circulation, rest assured it’s not likely going away anytime soon.
