With the dawn of digital media and currency, we are witnessing the sunset of newspapers, coins, bank notes, photographic film and all the inherent beauty these things possess. I’m fascinated with cash specifically because while it is a physical, tangible object that has collectively united humans for over 5,000 years. Each and every coin minted, every bill printed has a history behind it, connecting all the various hands that have passed it along over time. It is now being challenged by the rise of digital currency and that shift makes it more interesting than ever.
The United States’ strange and shadowy legacy is buried within these intricate engraved details and decorative motifs and I enjoy the act of drawing from these universal archetypes.
