Study of 1899 five-dollar Silver Certificate
48" x 22" ~ oil on plywood
Original Artwork Available ~ Prints Available

This intentionally rectified version of the 1899 United States five-dollar Silver Certificate was painted in response to the deliberate historical omission in G.F.C. Smillie’s engraving for the only US federal paper currency featuring a named Native American as compared to the original 1872 image of Lakota Chief Tatoka-Inyanka (Running Antelope) by photographer Alexander Gardner.
